A United Nations special committee has issued a chilling warning: the world may be witnessing “another Nakba” as Israel accelerates efforts to forcibly remove Palestinians from their land in Gaza.

Following an investigative mission, the UN Committee on Israeli Practices in the Occupied Territories accused Israel of engaging in ethnic cleansing and pursuing a strategy of “wider colonial expansion”, prioritizing settlement growth over Palestinian lives.

The alarm comes days after Israel proposed relocating hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from northern Gaza into six isolated encampments—raising fears of a new wave of mass displacement reminiscent of the original Nakba, or catastrophe, in 1948 when over 700,000 Palestinians were expelled or fled during the creation of the Israeli state.

“What we are witnessing could very well be another Nakba,” the committee stated bluntly after concluding its fact-finding mission in Amman, Jordan.

The panel, made up of UN ambassadors from Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Senegal, described Israel’s recent military actions and policies as a coordinated campaign of land seizure, forced evictions, and the replacement of Palestinian communities with Jewish settlers.

“Security operations are used as a smokescreen,” the report declared, “for rapid land grabbing, mass displacement, dispossession, demolitions, and ethnic cleansing.”

‘Inhuman and Systematic’ Abuse

Beyond forced displacement, the committee raised grave concerns about the treatment of Palestinians in Israeli custody. The report points to widespread use of torture, inhuman treatment, and sexual violence in prisons and military detention centers.

“The methods read like a playbook for humiliation and psychological destruction,” the report said, describing the practices as systematic and institutionalized within Israeli forces.

As Gaza reels from a prolonged total blockade, with humanitarian aid kept at bay despite desperate needs, the committee denounced the starvation policy as both “depraved” and deliberate.

“It is hard to imagine a world where food trucks sit just kilometers away from people being starved to death,” the report noted. “Yet this is the sick reality in Gaza.”

Legacy of Dispossession

The Nakba remains a defining trauma for Palestinians — the original mass displacement that shaped their national struggle. Today, the echoes are loud and unmistakable.

With Israel’s military actions intensifying and mass displacement looming, the committee’s words strike a grim tone:

“Israel continues to inflict unimaginable suffering while accelerating its colonial ambitions. This is not security — it’s strategy.”

The UN special committee was established in 1968 to monitor Israeli practices in occupied territories. More than 75 years after the original Nakba, the world may once again be watching history repeat — in real time.
