Tensions within the Western alliance flared on the global stage as US President Donald Trump made an early exit from the G7 summit, further exposing rifts among world powers over conflicts in the Middle East and Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Trump abruptly left the gathering, held in Italy, cancelling a scheduled meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy just hours after a deadly missile and drone strike killed 14 people in Kyiv. His departure also means the United States skipped high-level talks on strengthening sanctions against Moscow — a subject where Washington’s position is increasingly at odds with European allies.

The White House initially cited “what’s going on in the Middle East” as the reason for the early exit. But President Trump himself dismissed this, insisting his departure had “nothing to do” with the escalating Israel-Iran tensions. He instead accused French President Emmanuel Macron of “publicity seeking” after Macron linked Trump’s absence to efforts to broker a ceasefire.

The conflicting narratives have added to the confusion surrounding Washington’s foreign policy priorities, with analysts warning that the optics of the exit send a troubling signal of disunity at a time when collective response is urgently needed.

While the G7 typically serves as a platform for demonstrating solidarity among the world’s leading economies, this year’s summit has laid bare stark divisions, particularly over how to respond to the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza.

European leaders are reportedly frustrated by the US’s hesitancy to fully endorse additional sanctions against Russia, while Trump continues to push for a more cautious approach, citing concerns about domestic economic fallout.

For Ukraine, the cancellation of the bilateral meeting with the US president comes at a critical moment. The overnight attack in Kyiv, one of the deadliest in recent months, has left the country seeking stronger commitments from Western allies — commitments now overshadowed by diplomatic drama.

As global crises intensify, the G7’s fractured unity raises serious questions about the West’s ability to present a cohesive front. Trump’s early departure may prove more than a scheduling decision — it could mark another turning point in the unraveling of traditional alliances.

WafricNews will continue to monitor these developments as global leaders navigate an increasingly divided geopolitical landscape.
