California, USA – Canadian rapper Tory Lanez, currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for the 2020 shooting of fellow hip-hop star Megan Thee Stallion, has reportedly been hospitalized after a violent attack in a California prison facility.
The incident occurred early Monday morning at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, where the 32-year-old artist — born Daystar Peterson — is incarcerated. According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Lanez was assaulted around 7:20 a.m. in a housing unit of the medium-to-maximum security facility.
While officials have not disclosed the specifics of the attack, a statement shared on Lanez’s official Instagram account claims he was stabbed 14 times, suffering collapsed lungs and multiple wounds to his back, face, torso, and head. The post assured followers that despite the severity of the injuries, Lanez is conscious, breathing unaided, and in "good spirits."
“He is deeply grateful to be alive and thanks God for pulling him through,” the statement added.
Prison medical staff administered immediate aid before Lanez was transported to an external hospital. An investigation into the incident has been launched by the prison’s internal investigative team in coordination with the Kern County District Attorney’s Office.
The Tehachapi facility, situated roughly 100 miles north of Los Angeles in the Mojave Desert, houses about 1,700 inmates under medium and high security.
Lanez was convicted in December 2022 on three felony counts: assault with a semiautomatic firearm, possession of an unregistered loaded firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. The charges stemmed from a July 2020 incident in which Megan Thee Stallion, real name Megan Pete, testified that Lanez shot her in both feet after an argument escalated as they left a party hosted by Kylie Jenner.
Megan told the court that Lanez shouted at her to “dance” before opening fire. She sustained bullet fragments in both feet, which required surgery. She initially withheld Lanez’s identity, citing fears of police violence, but later named him publicly and in court.
Lanez’s legal team has appealed the conviction, though a previous motion for a new trial was denied. His attorneys have yet to comment on the recent prison attack.
In January 2025, a judge extended a protective order against Lanez through 2030 following Megan’s claims that he had been harassing her from behind bars via intermediaries.
Lanez, who first rose to fame with mixtapes in the late 2000s, enjoyed commercial success with multiple albums landing in the Billboard top 10. However, the shooting incident ignited a cultural reckoning across the hip-hop world — bringing issues such as gender-based violence, online harassment, and the specific targeting of Black women into sharper focus.
The high-profile trial was marked by deep divisions among fans and industry insiders. Lanez’s family and supporters often accused the justice system and influential industry figures, particularly those associated with Megan’s management under Roc Nation, of conspiring against him. His father famously erupted in court after the verdict, publicly denouncing prosecutors before later apologizing to the judge.
Meanwhile, Megan Thee Stallion has continued to ascend. The Grammy-winning rapper has secured multiple No. 1 singles and critical acclaim, becoming one of the defining voices of her generation in hip-hop.
As investigations continue into the prison incident, many are calling attention to the ongoing safety concerns within the U.S. correctional system, especially for high-profile inmates.
