At 42, Rhasha Newkirk is challenging stereotypes and societal expectations about love, intimacy, and self-worth. The Jacksonville, Florida resident is one of the stars of TLC’s new reality series Virgins, which follows adults in their 30s and 40s navigating dating and relationships while still being virgins.
“I actually feel great about being a virgin,” Newkirk said exclusively. “People often think there’s something wrong with you if you haven’t had sex by a certain age — but that’s not true. Reasons vary from culture to upbringing, and everyone’s journey is different.”
Newkirk, who is divorced and open about her interest in BDSM — a lifestyle choice popularized in mainstream culture by 50 Shades of Grey — says she knows her worth and refuses to settle for less than she deserves.
“I grew up watching my dad treat my mom with respect — buying flowers, paying for lunch. That’s what I’m used to,” she said. “Some men today don’t step up, and I won’t accept the bare minimum.”
Her brief marriage to a South Korean man she met on a dating app ended before it truly began — Newkirk says he was after a Green Card and intimacy never entered the picture.
On her BDSM interest, she laughed: “I know because I’ve got Google! I may not have tried everything, but I’m curious and know what I want to explore.”
She also addressed a common question about older virgins: “Do you have urges? Absolutely. But I have self-love, and I’m confident in my choices.”
Newkirk believes her story represents many others who choose to remain virgins later in life and urges society to be more understanding.
“You don’t have to follow society’s timeline,” she said. “Be true to yourself, be authentic, and trust that things will happen when the time is right.”
The TLC show also features three other adults — Sonali, Alex, and Deanne — each with their own unique journeys toward love and self-discovery, reminding viewers that everyone’s path is different.
