The Tennessee Board of Parole has recommended a pardon for Grammy-nominated country music star Jelly Roll, a move that will ultimately be decided by Governor Bill Lee, as reported by the Associated Press.

Jelly Roll, born Jason DeFord in Nashville, has been open about his troubled past, which includes drug-related offenses and time spent in prison. He has spoken frequently about how he turned his life around, rising to fame as a successful country artist despite his earlier struggles.

The parole board's recommendation came after a hearing where several individuals, including Nashville Sheriff Daron Hall, testified in support of Jelly Roll. The singer expressed his desire to perform internationally and continue sharing his story of redemption. He told the board that his criminal record has hindered his ability to travel for performances.

“I want to be an inspiration for people who are now where I used to be to let them know that change is truly possible,” Jelly Roll said during the hearing. “One of the reasons I’m asking for your recommendation for this pardon is because I’m looking to take my message of redemption through the power of music and faith around the world.”

At 17, Jelly Roll was incarcerated on a robbery charge, and at 23, he served time on drug charges. In 2008, he was sentenced to eight years of court-ordered supervision after drugs were found in his car.

Since making a name for himself in the music industry, Jelly Roll has become an advocate for those seeking redemption. In 2022, he testified before the Senate, urging stronger measures against the fentanyl crisis in the U.S. He also acknowledged his past involvement in drug dealing, describing it as a “victimless crime” at the time but now standing as someone committed to being part of the solution.

The singer also engages in community outreach, visiting jails, rehab centers, and youth organizations before his concerts. His efforts were highlighted during the parole hearing on Tuesday.
