A tense domestic standoff ended in gunfire late Thursday night in the Bronx after New York City police shot a man accused of threatening to kill his mother with a knife.

The NYPD said the incident unfolded just after 11 p.m. on Mulford Avenue in the Pelham Bay neighborhood, following a 911 call placed by a building security guard who heard screams coming from the apartment.

Responding officers found a 34-year-old man holding his 61-year-old mother in a chokehold with a large kitchen knife pressed dangerously close to her neck. Police say they immediately began trying to de-escalate the situation.

“For over two and a half minutes, our officers attempted to get the male to put the knife down and free his mother,” said NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera, who briefed reporters at the scene. “The man repeatedly threatened to kill her while refusing to comply.”

According to police, after several unsuccessful attempts to calm the suspect, one officer discharged their weapon, striking the man and enabling officers to safely separate him from his mother.

The suspect was transported in critical condition to Jacobi Hospital. His mother was physically unharmed, though visibly shaken, officials said.

The NYPD confirmed that the confrontation was recorded on officers’ body-worn cameras. The department’s Force Investigation Division is now reviewing the shooting, and a photo of the knife recovered at the scene has been released as part of the ongoing inquiry.

The incident highlights the continuing challenge of mental health and domestic violence responses, particularly in high-stakes situations where de-escalation efforts fall short.
