Nigeria’s Female Yellow Greens head into a must-win clash against Malawi today as the race to the semi-finals of the 2025 Kwibuka Women’s T20i tournament reaches a critical point.

With just two matches left in the round-robin phase, the Nigerian women sit in fifth place on the log, tied on six points with Zimbabwe and Tanzania but trailing on net run rate.

After a shaky start — losing to Zimbabwe and Brazil — the team found rhythm with wins against Tanzania, Cameroon, and Sierra Leone. A narrow defeat to hosts Rwanda kept them just outside the semi-final bracket, with net run rate (0.224) separating them from the top four.

Victory over Malawi today is crucial to Nigeria’s qualification hopes, but they’ll also be hoping for favourable results from other fixtures. Tanzania, who boast a far superior net run rate (2.220), face unbeaten Uganda, while Zimbabwe (0.678) take on Cameroon.

Nigeria will round off their group stage campaign against tournament favourites Uganda on Wednesday.

The Kwibuka T20i, founded in 2014 to honour the memory of victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, has grown into a major platform for African women's cricket. Kenya remains the most successful nation with four titles, while Uganda are defending champions.

With semi-final slots on the line and pride at stake, the Female Yellow Greens will need both grit and good fortune as they push for a place among Africa’s elite this week in Kigali.
