The Netherlands is gearing up for snap elections on October 29 following the sudden fall of the right-wing coalition government.

Interior Minister Judith Uitermark confirmed the election date on Friday, promising close cooperation with local authorities to ensure a smooth voting process across the country.

The vote comes after the far-right Party for Freedom (PVV), led by Geert Wilders, pulled out of the coalition over disagreements on immigration policies. This move forced Prime Minister Dick Schoof and his cabinet to resign, plunging the nation into political uncertainty.

Polls show a tight race between Wilders’ PVV and the Labour/Green Left alliance, led by former European Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans. The centre-right VVD party trails closely behind, hinting at a fiercely contested election.

Wilders criticized the government for delaying the promised “strictest-ever” immigration rules, claiming his demands were ignored. His exit from the coalition drew sharp rebuke from former partners, who accused him of putting personal ambition above national interest.

“We had a right-wing majority, and he threw it away for his ego,” said VVD leader Dilan Yesilgoz. Nicolien van Vroonhoven of the NSC called the collapse “irresponsible” at such a critical time.

The PVV shocked the political scene in November 2023, winning 37 out of 150 parliamentary seats to become the largest party. Yet to form government, Wilders had to partner with the VVD, BBB farmers’ party, and NSC, giving up his chance to be prime minister.

Recent polls indicate PVV support has slipped from 23% to 20%, with the Labour/Green Left alliance close behind at 19%. The fragmented political scene leaves the final outcome uncertain.

For now, Schoof’s cabinet will continue as caretaker government until a new leadership is formed.
