MADRID – Global streaming leader Netflix has announced a bold new investment plan, pledging more than €1 billion (approximately $1.1 billion) to support film and television production in Spain through 2029.

The announcement came during a high-profile event at Netflix’s production hub just outside Madrid, where co-CEO Ted Sarandos shared the company’s long-term vision for its Spanish operations. He was joined by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, underscoring the national significance of the commitment.

“Over the next four years, we plan to invest over one billion euros in Spain,” said Sarandos. “This investment allows us to deepen our contribution to the Spanish economy, expand job creation, and tell more powerful stories made in Spain.”

The event also marked a milestone: Netflix’s 10-year anniversary in the Spanish market. The company opened its first-ever international production studios there in 2019, just months after the Spanish crime drama La Casa de Papel (Money Heist) became a global phenomenon.

Since then, Spain has evolved into a creative powerhouse for the platform. Netflix has transformed its 22,000-square-metre complex into one of its primary production centers in the European Union.

The company says its Spanish operations currently support over 20,000 jobs across various sectors of the audiovisual industry — from screenwriting and acting to post-production and technical services.

Spain’s rise as a Netflix hub reflects the growing importance of non-English content in global entertainment. Series like Elite, Valeria, and Berlin (a Money Heist spinoff) continue to draw international audiences, bolstering Spain's reputation as a cultural exporter.

For Spain, the investment marks not only a financial boost but also global validation of its creative industries.
