Basketball icon LeBron James is taking the Los Angeles Lakers’ first-round playoff elimination in stride, acknowledging the strength of their opponents — the Minnesota Timberwolves — while revealing that injury may have sidelined him even if the series had gone further.

Speaking on the latest episode of the "Mind The Game" podcast alongside co-host Steve Nash, James offered a candid take on the Lakers’ postseason disappointment, after they were bounced in just five games.

"We ran into a damn good matchup" — LeBron Admits Timberwolves Were the Better Side

“It’s the matchups,” LeBron said plainly. “And we ran into a damn good matchup — a team that’s hungry, battle-tested, young but experienced, and ready to take that next step.”

The Lakers, who entered the playoffs with renewed energy following the February addition of Luka Dončić, were outplayed by a determined Minnesota squad led by rising superstar Anthony Edwards. Despite the hype and expectations, the series was a sobering reality check for the veteran-filled L.A. roster.

LeBron gave credit where it was due, calling the Timberwolves “a worthy opponent for sure,” while remaining respectful in defeat.

LeBron’s Knee Injury Could’ve Ended His Postseason Regardless

In a more personal reveal, the 39-year-old NBA legend shared that a serious knee injury sustained in the final game would have kept him off the court even if the Lakers had survived.

“I knew as soon as I collided with [Donte] DiVincenzo, something was wrong,” LeBron said. “My knee locked up. I stayed on the floor trying to see if it would ease up, but the pain was different — something I hadn’t felt before.”

A scan on May 1 confirmed a Grade 2 MCL sprain in his left knee, with doctors estimating a four-to-six week recovery timeline.

“Even if we had won Game 5, I would’ve probably missed Games 6 and 7,” he admitted. “That’s the hard part. You want to be there for your guys, but your body sometimes has other plans.”

What’s Next for the King?

Despite the early exit, LeBron’s individual numbers were as elite as ever — averaging 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists while shooting over 51% from the field in his 22nd NBA season.

Speculation continues to swirl about his future with the Lakers, and some reports suggest he may consider a move if it improves his shot at another title run. Though the four-time NBA champion has yet to confirm anything, the offseason promises to be closely watched.

Meanwhile, the Timberwolves have advanced to the Western Conference Semifinals, where they are currently trailing the Golden State Warriors 0-1.

As for LeBron, the journey may be paused — but it’s far from over.
