A U.S. federal judge has ruled that Apple violated a court order requiring it to ease restrictions in its App Store, marking a significant legal setback for the tech giant.
The ruling stems from Apple’s long-running legal battle with Epic Games, the maker of Fortnite, which challenged Apple’s control over in-app purchases and developer access. In a decision issued late Tuesday, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers found that Apple failed to fully comply with an earlier injunction meant to give app developers more freedom to direct users to alternative payment methods outside Apple’s ecosystem.
Specifically, the court concluded that Apple’s updated policies—while allowing some links to external purchasing options—still impose unreasonable restrictions and fees that undermine the intent of the original order.
“Apple has not honored the spirit nor the letter of the court’s injunction,” Judge Gonzalez Rogers wrote.
The judge’s original ruling, issued in 2021, required Apple to let developers inform users about external payment options and include links in their apps to those services. While the court stopped short of declaring Apple a monopoly, it criticized the company’s control over iOS transactions.
The latest ruling could lead to further penalties or require Apple to make more substantial changes to its App Store practices. Apple has not yet indicated whether it will appeal.
Epic Games called the decision a “victory for developers and consumers,” while consumer advocacy groups say it’s a reminder of the need for stronger enforcement of antitrust measures in Big Tech.
