London - Italy international Jorginho is preparing to leave the Premier League this summer, with reports confirming a move to Brazilian giants Flamengo once his contract with Arsenal expires.
The 33-year-old midfielder is expected to sign a three-year deal with the Rio de Janeiro club, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who says the agreement has been in place since January. The move will mark a homecoming of sorts for Jorginho, who was born in Brazil but relocated to Italy as a teenager.
Jorginho rose through the ranks at Hellas Verona before making his mark at Napoli. A 2018 transfer to Chelsea saw him become a central figure in both club and international football, winning the UEFA Champions League in 2021 and playing a pivotal role in Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph.
After joining Arsenal in 2023, Jorginho featured intermittently but remained a respected voice in the squad. His technical control and tactical intelligence earned him 57 caps with Italy, and a third-place finish in the 2021 Ballon d'Or voting behind Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski.
Flamengo, one of South America’s most storied clubs, will add Jorginho to a squad already featuring familiar European names such as former Manchester City fullback Danilo and ex-Juventus defender Alex Sandro. Managed by ex-Chelsea defender Filipe Luis, the club is also involved in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.
Interestingly, Flamengo are set to face Chelsea—the very club where Jorginho won his most prestigious titles—in the tournament’s group stage. They’ll also line up against Tunisia’s Esperance de Tunis and possibly a replacement for Mexico’s Club León, whose shared ownership with Pachuca presents a FIFA eligibility issue.
While Jorginho’s best years may be behind him, his experience and vision could prove invaluable for Flamengo both domestically and on the international stage. Fans will be watching closely as the midfielder prepares to reunite with Brazilian football in what could be a memorable late-career chapter.
