A DJ from the Isle of Lewis is making waves in the UK music scene after remixing a song as a birthday gift for his mum — and now he’s signed to a major record label.
Levi Heron, 29, from Stornoway, gave his own electronic spin to “The Glen” by Scottish band Beluga Lagoon at his mother Shona’s request for her 50th birthday. What started as a personal present quickly turned into a breakout hit.
Levi, who calls his style “Cèil-tech” — a fusion of traditional Ceilidh music and techno — told Wafricnews the remix took just a few hours to complete after his mum asked him to try it.
After sharing a short clip on TikTok, the track went viral, racking up millions of views in just two weeks. The song also gained four million plays on YouTube, catching the attention of record labels.
“I had calls from record companies all over the place,” Levi said. “I got a manager, and now I’m signed to Robots and Humans at Sony. It’s bonkers!”
Levi’s musical journey began early, with his first DJ decks at age eight and local gigs in Stornoway. But he always dreamed of reaching bigger audiences beyond the island.
With his remix climbing to number 34 in the UK midweek charts — jumping 12 spots in a week — Levi is now a full-time musician, having left his previous job in fish farming.
He said, “Before we had kids, we’d be going to raves all the time. Now, people listen to my music instead of me going out to listen to others. It’s unbelievable.”
The competition for the top UK spot is fierce, especially with Scottish superstar Calvin Harris and his new single “Blessings” in the mix.
Levi admits the rapid rise has been overwhelming but thrilling. Recently, he has shared stages with some of Scotland’s biggest rave artists and hinted at exciting collaborations ahead.
“I’m sticking with the Scottish vibe,” he said. “I’ve got tracks coming out with accordions and fiddles. The Scottish theme is working well for me.”
