Amid rising political speculation ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, a group of former state chairmen from the defunct Congress for Progressives Change (CPC) has reaffirmed its loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, disavowing any talk of forming or joining a political coalition to challenge the ruling party.

In a statement released Sunday, the Forum for State Chairmen of the Defunct CPC made it clear that its priority is to support President Tinubu and work towards strengthening the All Progressives Congress (APC). The statement, signed by the forum’s National Secretary, Sulaiman Oyaremi, emphasized unity and commitment over defection.

“We owe ourselves a duty to support the current leader of the party, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and to contribute to building an inclusive APC,” the forum said.

No to Coalition Politics – Forum Stands with Tinubu

The declaration comes amid persistent rumours that elements from the CPC bloc were considering joining a broader opposition coalition involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and others, in a possible political realignment ahead of the 2027 race.

But those reports were sharply refuted last month when ex-Nasarawa State Governor Tanko Al-Makura, speaking on behalf of CPC veterans, declared their support for Tinubu and the APC leadership.

That move, however, drew criticism from former Attorney General Abubakar Malami (SAN), who argued that Al-Makura lacked the authority to speak for the CPC bloc as a whole.

In response, the Forum acknowledged internal disagreements within the CPC family, but called for maturity and focus.

“With multiple camps speaking for the defunct CPC, it’s clear we lack unified leadership. But the focus should remain on party cohesion and national development,” said Oyaremi.

CPC Veterans Voice Grievances, But Choose Unity

Despite pledging support for Tinubu, the Forum did not shy away from airing frustrations. It lamented what it sees as systemic marginalisation of former CPC members in both party structures and government appointments — a situation they said undermines the sacrifices CPC leaders made during the formation of the APC.

“Former CPC state chairmen have not been treated fairly, despite our contributions to the party’s electoral victories. We are not asking for handouts, but for recognition and inclusion.”

Call for Governance Focus Over 2027 Ambitions

The group also used the opportunity to draw attention to the pressing economic and security crises facing Nigeria. It urged President Tinubu and APC-led governments at all levels to prioritize the welfare of citizens over political maneuvering.

“Insecurity and economic hardship have become existential threats. It’s time for the party and the government it birthed to respond more boldly and more urgently,” the statement read.

“The focus now should be national recovery — not electoral calculations for 2027.”

Despite internal divisions, the Forum said the majority of its members remain committed to the APC under Tinubu’s leadership, while continuing to align with former President Muhammadu Buhari, who originally led the CPC before the merger that created the APC.
