Prominent businesswoman and socialite Aisha Achimugu was taken into custody by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the early hours of Tuesday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

Sources close to Wafric News confirm that Achimugu, who had just flown in from London, was picked up around 5 a.m. as part of an ongoing investigation into allegations of criminal conspiracy and money laundering. She was previously declared wanted by the EFCC in March.

Her arrest came just a day after the Federal High Court in Abuja, under the supervision of Justice I.E. Ekwo, directed her to present herself at the EFCC headquarters on Tuesday, and appear in court on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.

Speaking to Wafric News, her legal representative, Chief Chikaosolu Ojukwu, confirmed the development. “Aisha Achimugu, who arrived voluntarily into the country from London, was arrested by the EFCC around 5 a.m. on Tuesday,” he said.

Chief Ojukwu expressed disappointment over the commission's action, calling it a breach of the court's order. “My client returned in good faith to honour the invitation by the EFCC, following a court undertaking. Her arrest at the airport undermines that process,” he stated.

In protest, Achimugu is reported to have begun a hunger strike, which her legal team says is to draw attention to what they describe as a violation of her fundamental rights. “She is a prisoner of conscience,” Ojukwu added.
An insider within the EFCC, who asked not to be named, confirmed the arrest to Wafric News. “She was declared wanted. We had to ensure she showed up as ordered by the court. There's no restriction on arresting her—we just can’t detain her if she appears. But we had to guarantee she did,” the source explained.

As of the time of this report, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale had not responded to requests for official comment.

Wafric News will continue to follow this developing story.
