A beautiful moment of musical cross-generational unity unfolded in Lagos this week as Afrobeats superstar Davido hosted Nigerian highlife legend Bright Chimezie, following the veteran’s public praise of Davido’s new hit single “With You.”
The meeting took place shortly after Bright Chimezie, known for his unique Zigima Sound, took to social media to express his admiration for “With You”—a standout track from Davido’s fifth studio album ‘5ive’, which features rising sensation Omah Lay and samples Chimezie’s 1980s classic “Because of English.”
In a video shared online, Davido is seen warmly welcoming the music legend at a Lagos venue, joined by close friends and associates. In another touching clip, Davido video-called his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, and his wife to introduce them to the highlife veteran—blending music, family, and history in one room.

A Legacy Lives On
The viral video of Bright Chimezie dancing to “With You” on his Instagram page was a proud endorsement of the new generation of Nigerian music drawing from the country's deep musical roots. He applauded both Davido and Omah Lay for “reviving the soul” of highlife with modern finesse.
Produced by hitmaker Tempoe, “With You” marries nostalgic highlife rhythms with Afrobeats swagger, part of a wider trend where new-age Nigerian artists are reclaiming and reinterpreting sounds from past decades.

This movement isn’t unique to Davido. In 2024 alone, Grammy-winner Tems reimagined Seyi Sodimu’s 1997 hit “Love Me Jeje”, while Asake sampled Jazzman Olofin and Adewale Ayuba’s “Raise the Roof” on his chart-topping single “Active” featuring American rapper Travis Scott.
For many fans and critics, these modern classics-in-the-making are more than just songs—they are a bridge between eras, a way of honouring the past while propelling Nigerian music into the global future.
With his album ‘5ive’ gaining global traction, Davido—now a five-time Grammy nominee—is preparing to hit the road for his upcoming ‘5 Alive’ tour, poised to take Nigeria’s rich musical heritage to stages around the world.
