Lagos, Nigeria – It was a night of love, tradition, and raw emotion as Nigerian music heavyweight Davido broke down in tears while delivering a heartfelt tribute at the wedding of his longtime manager and confidant, Asa Asika.
The traditional ceremony, held in Lagos on Saturday, was not just a celebration of love between Asa and his bride Leona — it became a powerful moment of reflection on friendship, loyalty, and the long road from hustle to success.
Dressed in full traditional attire and standing among the groomsmen, Davido, born David Adeleke, stunned many guests when he choked up during his speech. The award-winning singer recalled meeting Asa over 16 years ago — two years before his rise to stardom — and described the journey they embarked on together as nothing short of divine.
“We Built This From Fire”
In a viral video clip from the event, Davido struggled to hold back tears as he paid homage to the man who has stood by him through the highs and lows of his music career.
“Asa, I love you so much,” he began, voice trembling. “I’ve known you for 16 years, two years before I blew… so we blew together. You are one of the few people who can handle me — you, my wife, my Dad, and my uncle.”
The singer went on to share how the path they took was never handed to them. Instead, it was one carved from "fire, faith, and a bond that never broke."
“We didn’t chase the spotlight. We stayed rooted, loyal to our story, loyal to our people,” Davido said. “We didn’t sell out — we carried the culture, even when it felt heavy.”
More Than a Manager
Davido didn’t hold back in expressing how deeply Asa’s presence in his life has mattered. Far beyond business, Asa has been a brother, a protector, and a constant in a world where trust can be fleeting.
“You’ve been more than my manager,” he said. “You’ve been my shield. My sanity. My brother in every battle. When the lights were off and it got dark, you stayed.”
“And even now, with the world at our feet — you’re still that same solid soul I started with.”
The touching tribute was followed by an equally emotional message posted by Davido, where he admitted that Asa’s wedding “shattered” him — but in the most beautiful way.
A Celebration Beyond Glamour
While the wedding attracted celebrities, influencers, and industry figures, it was the powerful display of brotherhood between two of Afrobeats’ foundational figures that left the deepest impression.
As the global music world continues to celebrate Nigerian talent, the bond between Davido and Asa Asika serves as a reminder that behind the flashing lights, real friendships — forged in struggle and sealed in loyalty — still exist.
