Comedian Dana Carvey revealed in a recent episode of his “Fly on the Wall” podcast that portraying Joe Biden on “Saturday Night Live” was a sensitive task because he believed the former US president was mentally compromised.
Carvey said it was “obvious” that Biden was struggling, which made making fun of him a “delicate” matter in the comedy world.
“I knew that he was compromised mentally, it was clear. But many people were cautious about crossing lines that might embarrass him awkwardly,” Carvey explained.
He described playing Biden as “surreal” and “bizarre,” but also “a lot of fun.” Carvey stressed that his impression aimed to be humorous without being cruel, avoiding certain jokes he felt were inappropriate.
“My goal was to make Biden funny to everyone while keeping it respectful. That meant leaving out some things to keep it recognizable but not mean-spirited,” he said.
Fellow “SNL” alum David Spade, co-host on the podcast, added that public figures who hold power are easier targets for comedy.
Spade said, “It’s easier to joke about him as president than just an elderly man. Once someone becomes president, they’re fair game. But before that, people were careful about making fun of him.”
