American tennis star Coco Gauff has claimed her first French Open championship after an epic comeback victory over Aryna Sabalenka on Saturday.
In a gripping rematch of the 2023 U.S. Open final, the 21-year-old showed grit and determination to overturn a tough start, defeating Sabalenka 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 in a match that lasted nearly three hours.
With this win, Gauff becomes the first American woman in 10 years to lift the trophy at Roland Garros — a feat last achieved by Serena Williams in 2015. She’s also the youngest American to win the French Open since Serena did it as a 20-year-old in 2002.
Gauff, who suffered a heartbreaking loss to Iga Swiatek in the 2022 French Open final, expressed deep gratitude during the trophy ceremony.
“First, I’d like to thank God for always keeping me in his corner. This means a lot after many hard knocks,” she said. “Congratulations to Aryna, the world No. 1 — every match against you is tough.”
“My parents keep me grounded and give me belief. To my brothers, you inspire me every day,” she said, smiling as the French crowd cheered loudly. “Merci beaucoup for your incredible support.”
The final was a rollercoaster of momentum, with Gauff converting nine of 21 breakpoints to seize the advantage. Sabalenka’s game was marred by 70 unforced errors compared to Gauff’s 30, as the windy and rainy Paris weather added to the challenge.
Despite the loss, Sabalenka showed sportsmanship and resolve.
“Thank you to my team. I’m sorry for this terrible final,” she told the crowd, congratulating Gauff and promising, “I’ll come back stronger.”
This was Sabalenka’s second Grand Slam final this year after falling to Madison Keys at the Australian Open in January.
For Gauff, the victory marks a major milestone and hints at a bright future ahead — as she continues to rise as one of tennis’s brightest young stars.
