London, U.K. — American R&B superstar Chris Brown has been arrested in the United Kingdom in connection with a violent nightclub incident that allegedly took place over a year ago in London’s upscale Mayfair district.

British police confirmed the Thursday arrest of a 36-year-old man at a hotel in Manchester on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm — a serious charge under U.K. law. While authorities did not name the suspect, citing legal restrictions prior to formal charges, multiple reports have identified the individual as Brown.

According to The Sun, which broke the story, music producer Abe Diaw claims he was assaulted by Brown in February 2023 at Tape London, a well-known luxury nightclub frequented by celebrities. Diaw alleges that Brown struck him in the head with a bottle before launching a brutal attack that left him hospitalized.

The alleged assault, described by Diaw as "unprovoked," involved repeated punches and kicks while he was lying defenseless on the club floor. He has since filed a £12 million ($16 million USD) lawsuit against the singer.

The Sun reported that upon learning Brown was back in the U.K., it contacted the Metropolitan Police, which then acted on the information, leading officers to travel to Manchester where the arrest was made.

Brown's team has not publicly responded to requests for comment.

A History of Fame and Controversy

Known by fans as “Breezy,” Chris Brown has had a career marked by both chart-topping success and a long string of legal troubles. He first rose to fame in 2005 as a teenage sensation with the hit single Run It, and has since built a decorated music portfolio, including Grammy wins for F.A.M.E. and most recently 11:11 (Deluxe).

However, the singer’s public image has often been overshadowed by violence-related incidents. His 2009 felony assault conviction for attacking then-girlfriend Rihanna remains one of the most infamous moments in modern music history. Brown has also faced other criminal charges, including a 2014 assault outside a Washington, D.C. hotel and a 2024 incident in Texas where he and his entourage allegedly assaulted concertgoers.

In addition to his current legal woes, Brown is embroiled in a defamation case against Warner Bros. Discovery over the documentary Chris Brown: A History of Violence, which he claims falsely portrays him as a serial abuser.

Upcoming Tour Still Scheduled

Despite the ongoing investigation, Brown is slated to begin an international tour next month, sharing the stage with artists like Jhene Aiko, Summer Walker, and Bryson Tiller. The tour opens in Europe and is set to hit North America in July.

It remains unclear how the recent arrest may impact the tour schedule or Brown’s ability to travel internationally.

As the investigation develops, fans and critics alike await further statements from Brown’s legal team and the Metropolitan Police.
