Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has rejected a big-money move to Al-Hilal, turning down one of the most lucrative offers yet from Saudi Arabia’s Pro League.
The 30-year-old Portuguese midfielder had spent several days weighing the offer, which would have more than doubled his current salary at Old Trafford. But after extensive discussions with his family, Fernandes informed Al-Hilal over the weekend that he will not be making the switch.
The Saudi club had reportedly been ready to spend between £80 million and £100 million to secure the United playmaker—who has been central to the Red Devils’ midfield since arriving from Sporting Lisbon in 2020.
Family Over Fortune
Sources close to the deal say Fernandes was seriously considering the move, which would have seen him become one of the highest-paid players in the world. But in the end, loyalty, lifestyle, and family priorities carried the day.
United, who were not formally approached with a bid, are said to be relieved and pleased by Fernandes’ decision. His continued leadership under new head coach Ruben Amorim is viewed as vital to the club’s rebuilding process.
Amorim had earlier expressed confidence that Fernandes would remain with the Premier League side, telling reporters on Friday that he believed the midfielder’s heart was still in Manchester.
Staying Put—for Now
Fernandes is expected to address the situation publicly during a pre-match press conference in Germany on Tuesday, ahead of Portugal’s Nations League semi-final.
With 290 appearances and 98 goals in a United shirt since his £47 million move five years ago, Fernandes has been one of the club’s most consistent performers and fan favorites.
Al-Hilal, meanwhile, may now shift focus to other high-profile European targets ahead of the Club World Cup later this month.
The Saudi Push Continues
Saudi Pro League clubs have aggressively courted top European stars in recent years, reshaping the global transfer market with eye-watering offers. While many players have been lured by record-breaking wages, Fernandes’ rejection sends a clear message: not everyone is ready to trade Champions League nights for desert lights.
