Bayern Munich have secured their record-extending 33rd Bundesliga crown after Bayer Leverkusen failed to pick up maximum points in a 2-2 draw against SC Freiburg on Sunday afternoon.
The defending champions needed a win to keep their title hopes alive, but despite a dramatic stoppage-time equalizer from Jonathan Tah—whose precise header found the far corner—the result wasn’t enough to delay Bayern’s inevitable coronation. The draw confirmed Munich as champions with two matches still left on the calendar.
Bayern had come agonizingly close to sealing the deal a day earlier when goals from Eric Dier, Michael Olise, and Leroy Sané helped overturn a two-goal deficit against RB Leipzig. But Leipzig's Yussuf Poulsen struck late in added time, forcing a 3-3 draw and postponing the celebrations.
Still, Sunday’s result officially ended the title race. Bayer Leverkusen, last season’s surprise champions, now trail by an unbridgeable margin. Their 2023-24 triumph remains the only instance in the past 13 years where a team other than Bayern Munich has lifted the Bundesliga trophy.
Bayern’s title win further solidifies their dominance in German football, with Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach—the league’s next most successful clubs—still far behind with five titles apiece since the Bundesliga's inception in 1963.
The championship also marks a personal milestone for head coach Vincent Kompany, who joined from Burnley and quickly asserted dominance in his debut season. Under his leadership, Bayern climbed to the top of the table by Matchweek 3 and never looked back.
Equally significant is what this title means for England captain Harry Kane. After years of near-misses with Tottenham Hotspur and the national team, the prolific striker finally ends his silverware drought, adding a major club trophy to his personal accolades.
As Bayern celebrate yet another chapter in their storied legacy, the rest of the Bundesliga is left to wonder what it will take to stop their relentless reign.
