Gaza City – Israeli forces have killed at least 23 Palestinians across the Gaza Strip in the latest wave of attacks, with nearly half of the victims shot while trying to collect humanitarian aid, according to local health officials.
The deadly incidents occurred at and around aid distribution points operated by the U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). Among the dead, at least 11 were shot while attempting to reach food aid, underscoring the growing risks faced by civilians in what is fast becoming one of the worst humanitarian crises of the century.
Aid Points Become Death Zones
Medical staff at al-Awda Hospital reported that at least three people were killed and many others injured as Israeli troops opened fire on starving civilians approaching the GHF aid hub near the Netzarim Corridor in central Gaza.
In a separate incident near Rafah’s al-Mawasi area, two civilians were shot dead, and over 50 others wounded in what medics described as another unprovoked attack on people gathering near a GHF distribution site. The injured were transported to Red Cross Hospital for treatment.
Elsewhere in the Strip, Israeli air raids continued throughout Sunday, claiming the lives of 12 more Palestinians in southern Gaza. Another seven people were killed when a missile struck a gathering in Beit Lahiya, northern Gaza.
‘Execution Sites,’ Hunger, and Collective Punishment
With famine looming, thousands of Gazans are making dangerous treks to food distribution points—often under Israeli surveillance and sniper fire. What were once intended as lifelines are now being referred to by survivors as "execution sites."
Despite announcing a temporary closure of its hubs on Saturday, witnesses say desperate civilians still flocked to GHF locations, hoping for sustenance. Instead, they were met with violence. At least 79 Palestinians were killed that day alone, many while approaching aid centers.
According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, more than 274 people have been killed and over 2,000 wounded near GHF distribution sites since the organization began operating in Gaza in late May.
The Israeli military has not commented on Sunday’s incidents, though in past cases, it claimed that troops fired only when “suspects” deviated from approved access routes.
Global Condemnation of Weaponised Aid
The United Nations, aid workers, and Palestinian authorities have increasingly condemned the GHF operation as not only inadequate but also dangerous and unethical.
“GHF, from a principled humanitarian standpoint, has failed,” said Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). “Aid must be delivered safely where people are—not in sites that risk turning into death traps.”
The armed group Hamas has accused Israel of “using hunger as a weapon of war,” turning humanitarian relief points into zones of mass killing. It also rejected Israeli claims that it was looting aid supplies.
A War Without Mercy
Since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza, nearly 55,300 Palestinians have been killed, the vast majority of them civilians. Much of the Gaza Strip has been reduced to rubble. Over two million residents are now displaced, facing catastrophic levels of food insecurity and limited access to water, medicine, or shelter.
As the world watches, the human cost continues to rise—and for many in Gaza, even a search for food may now be a death sentence.
