As Nigeria edges closer to the 2027 general elections, a leading voice within the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Lanre Adebayo, has boldly claimed that neither the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) nor the Labour Party (LP) is strong enough to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu or the ruling party.
Dr. Adebayo, who serves as the Director-General of The Progressive Institute (TPI) — a policy think-tank established by the APC — made the remarks during a strategic courtesy visit to the Deputy Senate President, Senator Jibrin Barau, at the National Assembly on Wednesday.
“2027 is right around the corner,” Adebayo stated. “When you assess the current political atmosphere, it’s clear there’s no formidable opposition to the APC. But this is not a call for complacency — we must double down on strengthening our internal structures and sustaining the leadership God has entrusted to us.”
The Progressive Institute, launched to train Nigeria’s next generation of political leaders in democratic values, has become central to APC’s long-term strategy to consolidate power and redefine ideological engagement within the country’s political space.
Speaking during the visit, Dr. Adebayo emphasized the need for ideological clarity, urging politicians and media to shift focus away from sensationalism.
“Our politics must evolve. We need to stop wasting airtime on trivial matters like sexual harassment allegations and focus instead on governance, economic reform, and national development,” he said, subtly criticizing what he described as the ‘mundanity’ of recent political discourse.
Senator Barau, in response, welcomed the delegation and lauded the impact TPI has made since its inception. He commended the APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, for his leadership in infusing innovation and strategic thinking into party operations.
“I was there during the unveiling of this great Institute,” Barau recalled. “It reflects the kind of thinking we need in modern politics — forward-looking, data-driven, and innovative. The party must continue to invest in institutions like TPI that keep us ahead.”
As internal party machinery gears up for 2027, the message from APC insiders is clear: the ruling party intends not just to hold power but to shape the direction of national politics for the foreseeable future.
