During SMU football's final spring practice on Friday, players will sport a custom-designed helmet created by an inspiring 11-year-old cancer survivor, Trevor Hurton, who is dreaming big for his future.
"I want to be a lot of things when I grow up, but right now, it's probably an astronaut or a veterinarian," Trevor shared with enthusiasm.
Trevor’s journey began when he was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor at just eight years old.
“We thought he had a stomach bug because of the nausea and other unusual symptoms,” explained his mother, Larie Hurton. “A CT scan revealed the tumor, and within 24 hours, Trevor had undergone his first brain surgery.”
For two years, Trevor and Larie made regular trips to Children’s Health for chemotherapy. Although the tumor was inoperable, it has since shrunk.

“They couldn’t remove it, but it’s dead now. We joke that I have a dead part inside me,” Trevor said with a smile.
Trevor’s resilient attitude and outlook on life have earned him a place in a heartwarming collaboration with SMU. For the third consecutive year, the football team will unveil a custom helmet at their final spring event, and Trevor’s design was selected out of a dozen submissions.
“The team created a special helmet with Trevor’s logo on it,” Larie said, proud of her son’s accomplishment.
Trevor couldn't contain his excitement: "A lot of the players signed it, and I thought it looked really cool. I think they’re going to look amazing wearing it.
