A Chinese national who fought for Russia in Ukraine has shared a chilling account of his experience, urging fellow citizens to reconsider any thoughts of joining the conflict.

Michael (a pseudonym), 29, enlisted with the Russian army to "experience military life abroad." However, his journey took a dark turn when he was confined in a cramped, steel-barred cell for 21 days after a dispute over protective gear.

"I could barely lift my head," Michael recounted. "That ordeal shattered any illusions I had about this war."

After serving with the Wagner Group and later signing a contract with Russia's Defence Ministry, Michael was deployed to Bakhmut. He described the conditions as "a joke," citing inadequate equipment, poor logistics, and widespread corruption.

His story aligns with that of other Chinese nationals who have fought for Russia. Two individuals, Wang Guangjun and Zhang Renbo, were captured by Ukrainian forces in April. They revealed that they were lured by Russian propaganda on platforms like TikTok, promising high pay and non-combat roles. Instead, they were thrust into active combat zones with little training or support .

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed that at least 155 Chinese citizens are fighting for Russia, with recruitment often facilitated through Chinese social media platforms.

Michael's message is clear: "Don't make the same mistake I did. The reality is far worse than the propaganda."

For those considering joining the conflict, Michael advises: "Think carefully. This is not the adventure it seems."

His warning serves as a stark reminder of the harsh realities faced by foreign fighters and the deceptive allure of online recruitment campaigns.
